@Breonte put it this way he went on JJ reddicks podcast because he knew he wouldn’t be asked any tough questions like a actual reporter would ask. Ben Simmons is a hell of a player yes but he’s mentally soft and not due to no mental health he’s just not a prime time player which is fine he adds a lot to a team but can a team win with him at point guard like doc said IDK and he’s definitely NOT worth super max money he’s a role player and what makes it so bad is everyone who defends him fails to realize dude blames everyone but never took nor takes accountability for his lack of contribution to a team

Finally! Simmons is back. It is crazy how underrated he is/was. He wasn't a scorer but affected the game in many ways. It does seem with all the injuries and the talks, it really got to his head so its good to see him back and hope he expands from there.

@Brodie Stephens In that essay of yours, you totally missed the fact that those statements were mild as, he wasn't blamed for the loss. Ben is just ultra soft mentally. I guarantee you, this kind of thing will happen again with him.

    • Brodie Stephens
      Brodie Stephens Il y a jour +3

@AK 74 Doc and Joel DID throw him under the bus though. That was really petty, and really uncalled for. Like the guys discussed throughout this episode, if you work in any other job, and your boss and your colleague blame the whole team's overall failure on one small thing you did wrong.... you would change jobs. That's not a good workplace environment. You would leave. If you don't have support from your boss and your workmates in what is a whole team effort, you wouldn't put up with being blamed for the whole organisation's failure to produce. If it was McDonald's instead of an NBA team, and the store had a bad day of sales, you can't blame one fries cook for getting one order out late. There's a bigger systemic issue that caused sales to be down that day. It doesn't take a genius to know that.
It wasn't Ben's fault that the WHOLE TEAM lost to Atlanta. It shouldn't have come down to one play. If everyone did their jobs properly (Ben included of course), they would have been up by 15 points when Simmons passed the ball to Matisse. The Sixers didn't lose that game because Simmons passed one time when he should have shot. They lost because the Sixers (team) scored less points in 48 minutes than the Hawks (team) scored in 48 minutes. It's quite simple.

    • AK 74

@hardsequencer94 He blames everyone else for how they react to his performances. Like he shouldn't be criticized. Barkley and Shaq should 'protect players', Doc and Embiid 'threw him under the bus'. He thinks that he shouldn't get criticized publicly

This interview is so good and I totally understand what Ben Simmons have been through. A lot of us experienced this kind of path but I can't imagine the difficulty to find the peace you need when it is public. No blame to Shaq and others who criticized him, like he said this is just ignorance and also a lack of empathy. But you have to know what it is personally to understand the difficulty and the complexity of that. I can't not wait to see one of my favorite player on the floor again and so happy to hear the wiseness he bring to the table here.

I think it’s great we finally hear some of what Ben was going through and his thoughts. He’s a great player and we want him to do well. However also, I think JJ and the podcast coddled him a bit through the interview and there was a lack of real accountability. BOTH sides Philly org and Ben were wrong in some ways. Still seems that Ben is deflecting the real issues instead of saying “look I did x y z this was wrong , I can do this better by etc” I didn’t really get that. You can tell he’s still thin skinned. This is in no way discounting mental health issues because that’s real!

  • The Unintentional Intellect

This interview can be a blessing, a curse and a reality check. The blessing is that he is telling his side and how he has felt over the year and a half since what has been his defining moment in the NBA. Unfortunately, the curse is having to replay that moment over and over again in your head and know you passed up a chance that you may never get again. That in many ways is why he waited so long to talk about. The reality is everyone goes through something but it is how you handle the situation that defines you ultimately and the last time the world saw Ben Simmons in an NBA basketball game, the moment defined him. He will have every opportunity to get back to being the player he was but when that defining moment presents itself again, what will he do? The answer lies within himself but will he seize the moment, only time will tell.

He has potential. I wouldn't say generational talent because that would mean he would be at LeBron, KD, Steph, Giannis level. But dude is ruining his potential by being a brat. Dude says he has mental issues then right after gets caught making out with his girlfriend at the US Open and just partying all summer long and not training one bit. This dude didn't practice or pick up a basketball the entire summer last year and then he goes on saying he has mental issues when he sits out games for Philly and gets criticized? THAT'S our issue. And don't get me started with the "jersey in the pocket"... If you actually believe that, then you're just dumb... Props to JJ to be subtle and proper when having to interview. It allowed players to open up and made it safe. Sometimes we never realise how special and take Ben for granted. He is an amazing player. No judgement and keep moving forward. Forget the pass criticism and play the game you love. It’s more than a game

@Joe Bloe If he just plays defense and pass and dunk, the Nets will go far. Pressure is off him. Embiid and Simmons was always awkward. Simmons with Kyrie, KD and Joe Harris hitting threes will be incredible. Simmons a playmaking center now. This will be a fun season for the Nets!

@GhostTheRipper WOW! Yes my friend, god love you, that's a stretch. Man has not demonstrated an ounce of desire for getting back on the court. • Brodie Stephens
Brodie Stephens Il y a jour

@Tyrone Biggums I'll take that bet for sure. Simmons is an insanely good basketball player. He literally does everything other than shooting at an elite level.
Because he's an unselfish player and cares exclusively about winning.... he knows passing to someone like JJ Redick for an open three is an infinitely better shot than HIM jacking a three himself. He knows him taking a three is a low percentage shot, so he passes the ball to his team mates for a high percentage shot. That's intelligent, selfless basketball. That's why Simmons is such a great player. Basketball is a team sport, and ensuring your team takes high percentage shots is how you play good TEAM basketball.... and playing good team basketball is how you win games.

Well done to JJ and the other guy for creating an environment where we can see Ben Simmons as himself for the first time maybe ever. Ben comes across as a genuinely likeable guy and I wish him all the best. As an Aussie who only wants to see him succeed, I wish we could see him talk like this more often.
That said, JJ missed a perfect opportunity here to give Ben a chance to react to the single most important criticism he gets:
    - @20.30 Ben is defending his decision not to shoot because he's trying to "win" and make "winning plays". JJ needed to put to Ben that often - particularly in pressure playoff games - the winning play for Ben was to be aggressive with his shot to take pressure off Joel and other scorers who were being shut down. Those are the "winning plays" Ben has never wanted to make, because he doesn't have enough confidence in his shot, and his fear of being ridiculed. The sad thing is even a shot and a miss would be better than no shot at all in many of these situations. It would have been nice to hear that question from JJ.
It's clear from this interview that Ben feels extremely defensive about having to justify his merits as a player, and who could blame him considering the barrage of criticism he has faced since entering the League.
Ultimately though, I think Ben would personally benefit from being less defensive in his reactions ("I guard 1 through 5! I do other things!") and instead just openly accept his weakness (shooting) needs more work if he's to elevate to the next level. Some open honesty there would go a long way to fans giving him an easier time. This interview was literally the first time I've ever heard him admit shooting is a weakness for him, so credit to him for that.
Good luck in Brooklyn Ben I'll be cheering for ya.

Thanks for this podcast. It's so difficult to get chances to hear what a person got to say, when the media just tends to get the "stuff" they want out of you instead of listening to you for real.
As the man has said himself, Ben Simmons definitely didn't handle the situation well back then, but JJ makes me able to understand more about what's ACTUALLY happening to him back then.
Majority of the media these days look for punchlines, views, attention and we start to get blind to what's happening behind the scenes. Crazy thing is we are getting used to this and personally I have to constantly remind myself what I hear might not be even 10% of the true picture.
Keep up the good work JJ, really appreciate what you have been doing and I am sure lots of others feel the same way.

I’m not giving up on Ben cause at the end of the day he is 6 foot 10 and with access to world class training facilities even if he can’t shoot 3’s he can still excel in the other categories(assists, rebounds, blocks,).
