    Games discussed this month include:
    ARKHAM HORROR: THE CARD GAME
Blurring the traditional lines between roleplaying and card game experiences, Arkham Horror: The Card Game is a Living Card Game of Lovecraftian mystery, monsters, and madness! Each of your adventures carries you deeper into mystery. You'll find cultists and foul rituals. You'll find haunted houses and strange creatures. And you may find signs of the Ancient Ones straining against the barriers to our world. Each choice you make has consequences that reach beyond the current scenario at hand, and your actions may earn you valuable experience with which you can better prepare yourself for the adventures that still lie before you.
    ROOT
Root is a game of adventure and war in which 2 to 4 (1 to 6 with the 'Riverfolk' expansion) players battle for control of a vast wilderness. The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods. In Root, players drive the narrative, and the differences between each role create an unparalleled level of interaction and replayability. Leder Games invites you and your family to explore the fantastic world of Root!
    WINGSPAN
Taking flight from spot thirteen to land at number one this month is Wingspan by Stonemaier Games. Wingspan is a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game in which players are bird watchers, ornithologists, researchers and collectors - all seeking to discover and attract the best birds to their network of wildlife preserves. Demonstrating that even in the world of tabletop games, even environmental conservation is rife with competition. The game includes 170 unique cards featuring fabulous feathered illustrations, custom dice and a tailor-made Game Trayz insert, 75 egg miniatures, a birdfeeder dice tower, and other components designed with an avian touch. Wingspan will be soaring into retailers on March 8th. In the meantime, if you wet your beak, you can try out a digital version of the game that’s available right now on the Tabletopia online platform
    TAPESTRY
Tapestry is a two-hour civilization game for 1-5 players designed by Jamey Stegmaier. Create the civilization with the most storied history, starting at the beginning of humankind and reaching into the future. The paths you choose will vary greatly from real-world events or people - your civilization is unique! In Tapestry, you start from nothing and advance on any of the four advancement tracks (science, technology, exploration, and military) to earn progressively better benefits. You can focus on a specific track or take a more balanced approach. You will also improve your income, build your capital city, leverage your asymmetric abilities, earn victory points, and gain tapestry cards that will tell the story of your civilization.

Gloomhaven just isn't as great as everyone says it is. I don't understand it. There is nothing that drew me in at the beginning, every scenario is just some bs paragraph, then you fight, fight, then fight some more.
I think some of the mechanics were great, it is a decent game, and has a ton of unlockable content, but I just didn't feel a good reason to do any of it. So I haven't played very far into it.

We're about 73 games into the campaign, and in theory we're only 2 scenarios from the end (I think). Think we might need to change up some characters to actually get there, though.

I and my group completed the original campaign for Gloomhaven in 14 months. That's 2-3 games per session, every weekend.

  • Alcovitch

It doesn't take 125hr nor 61 games to complete Gloomhaven's campaign. Guy's family must have repeated a bunch of scenarios or did every possible side quest imaginable.
My group did it in about 40 scenarios.

Perhaps you can just make a "top 10 games AVAILALBE for purchase TODAY" list? These "kickstarter", "Out of Print", and "future" games really don't do us much good. Kinda like the "hottest" MMORPGs... that never see the light of day!

Tapestry seems to be an excellent game, but a bad Civ game, too sterilized and streamlined. I think that one aspect people enjoy in Civ games the most is seeing their civilization grow and advance from a humble, stone age village to a sprawling, high-tech empire.. and Tapestry just fails to deliver at that front. So now it's just a matter of how well will people adapt to what Tapestry really is (an optimization puzzle with nice minis and a vague civilization theme) instead of what they expected it to be (a condensed Civilization-like experience). I'm not too optimistic but hey.. it worked for Scythe.

We've played about 40 hours of Gloomhaven as a 2-3 man group, each one of us just retired our "main" characters and have all switched to new classes!
We have a ton of meat left to chew, this game is so beefy!

Gloomhaven really made my day last week when I managed to beat the important scenario 38 on solo mode. About 40 scenarios played in the time span of 11 month, I can nearly see the end of the main campaign now with a dozen of unlocked side scenarios still unplayed. No matter if I played solo or two player with my little daughter, none of our games was under two hours, many about three - so estimated time played up until now is 100-110 hours... Wow. Oh Wingspan by the way is very beloved by my daughter, but my brother in law hated it and never wants to play it again. Too much downtime for his taste... 😜

    Gloomhaven Playtime Estimate

Our group meets on average of once per month.

    We've attempted 14 scenarios. I'd estimate 3 hours each (4 players).

Additionally, we've done 9 Random Dungeons, which I'd estimate at 2 hours each

All told, I'd estimate we're about 60 hours of play time, and probably 1/3 the way through the campaign (I've avoided spoilers, so I'm not sure exactly how long the game is).

    • Luke Patton
      Luke Patton Il y a 4 mois +1

Alex Wright They (almost) all find that perfect balance between new gameplay elements and more familiar things.
Helps and Elysium, the first one we got, really brought the game back to our table with the increased variability the maps bring.
Venus Next is my personal favorite, bringing a new currency and a new global parameter while not increasing game time all that much. This one honestly feels like it was probably part of the base game design originally and got cut out and now we have it back!
Prelude makes the beginning of the game more interesting, allowing each player to be more personalized and focused from the start. It also brings down the game time just enough to compensate for the added time other expansions have added.
And colonies really isn’t a bad expansion at all. Some good new choices, something to use your energy on (finally), and some more variety in viable strategies is great. But it’s the only one I feel like I can’t play with new players, and it definitely adds a solid chunk to gameplay time.
I hope that helps, I’m happy to talk about TM any day :)

  • Eric Link

Tapestry was super hot at DTR. Everyone seemed to enjoy the game play but the length of play seems a bit too much and, because of a technology anomaly, Eric Summerer finished his game 45minutes before everyone else. I believe he came in second... or maybe he won... but this strange type of player elimination and overall game length may hold this game back... maybe.

  • Allan Nielsen
    Allan Nielsen Il y a 4 mois +7

Instead of hottest games it should be most talked about. A game like 7th continent isn't really available anymore - unless you're willing to sell a kidney. Sleeping Gods isn't out for at least 15 months.

    • BoardRoom Gamer
      BoardRoom Gamer Il y a 4 mois

@alex bok enough people as of the release of this video? I’d say not... again the original comment started with the topic should be most talked about...not hottest games when the public has yet to weigh in. That’s all I was getting at.

      McFly Il y a 4 mois +1

Ummm.. 7th Continent *is* available. Serious Pulp are selling a "Classic" version of it, which is basically a slightly paired down variant of the Kickstarter version. And I'm pretty sure you don't need to sell your kidney for it, unless you're willing to part with it for 60 dollars. :)

Terraforming Mars is, according to scientists, actually impossible due to the absence of a magnetic field on the planet. This means that any atmosphere generated by man would be totally wiped out of Mars by the solar wind. The theme has been destroyed, and the game has been converted into a deprecated abstract game.

I dont see how games that haven't been released for sale can be on this list.
How can they be so popular to be in a top 10 with nobody except maybe playtesters voting for them? Seems an odd rating system to me.
If voters for these unreleased games are casting a vote based on hype and not an actual play experience it would invalidate the results in my opinion.

    125 hours playing Gloomhaven !??

Ok... I have a rant here...
Time and time again people complain about some board games taking more than 2 hours to play.
I've played countless board games which took between 4 and 200 hours. ... I don't get it. Why is short play time a virtue in it self? I can't think of a short game offering the same depth as most long games I have.
So ... if people are willing to play a Gloomhaven campaign game taking 125 hours, could we then stop comparing multi-session games (like most wargames) to 1-2 hours games with the argument that they take too long to play?

    • Jonathan Lane
      Jonathan Lane Il y a 4 mois +1

People complain about the heftiness of Twilight Imperium. I'd just like to point out that the box for Gloomhaven is actually bigger than that for TI4.

No shortage of fools espousing "a game over 2 hours in length is too long and bad design". Fools are never to be heeded. When something becomes popular, the uninformed and ignorant often arrive also.

    • Peter Mogensen
      Peter Mogensen Il y a 4 mois +1

      @Robert Lipski
Not necessarily ... but it's very hard to get the depth of longer games if you only have 1.5 hour to let the game play out over.
I would much rather play 100 hours of World in Flames than 50 2-hour games of Memoir-44. The total depth and generated narrative is much much higher per hour invested.
PS: And ... argh... just as I wrote this I heard "The broken meeple" in the background decsribe games taken 3.5 hour games as "taking forever" ... *sigh* ... If I have to drive 1/2 hour to get to a play session why on earth would I want it to only last 3.5 hours???!?

    • Peter Mogensen
      Peter Mogensen Il y a 4 mois

      @Max Nix Yeah well ...
But for someone who likes to play deep wargames it's really not interesting to play against someone who focuses on visuals, don't want to invest time in learning the rules and doesn't find it an interesting challenge to avoid mistakes "weakening the flank".
I mean... even if I could convince a person of the mindset you describe to play a wargame with me, I'm not sure I would be interested.

"Marvel Champions"... isn't there already "Legendary" ???

@BoardRoom Gamer i found some slipcase covers for Legendary that make setup/teardown 60% easier. and while i enjoy legendary from time to time, i didn't really feel like you were playing the characters. Marvel Champions looks like you'll get to feel like you're actually spider-man/peter parker or iron man/tony stank

Laurent Collin yes there is Legendary - deckbuilder as I’m sure you know. I’m hoping Champions isn’t such a setup and tear down nightmare like Legendary. Also fully cooperative, where with Legendary there are VP which made no sense to me. Especially when players are ok with everyone losing if they didn’t score more VP than someone else. If I wanted to play a “mess with opponents, semi co-op” I’d bust out cutthroat caverns.

Yup. Each campaign should take about...10-20 hours? And you can play about 4 campaigns before seeing new content with how the goal of finding EIGHT totems is laid out as there are 30 total totems
