How to create a face cast

  • Ajoutée 9 août 2015
  • The do it yourself face cast! To make sure our channel is a one-stop-shop for everything in special effects makeup we decided to do a face cast tutorial as well.
This will be used in some of our upcoming makeups so make sure you create your own :-)
ONLY USE PLASTER GAUZE and always follow the insctructions on your specific product. Our particular brand is to be used with water below 35° to avoid exothermic reaction.

This is what 'plaster gauze' is. This is what they are using in the video.
They are NOT using gauze and Plaster of Paris together, as many might be assuming.

hey just want to say that i really love your videos and tutorials, the steps is really clear. i hope u wont mind if u can list down some brands or product name for us in order to let us know which type we should get to avoid using the wrong one or some that is unsuitable for use on the skin :) and sometime it is really troublesome that my country didnt sell some kind of product that u used :( will be appreciate to that :) keep it up to u ellinor ! really love your turorial

I noticed that the inside of yours looks super smooth. I tried this and mine had the weave marks of the gauze. Was my gauze just different or did you maybe coat your inside with something? My plastered face ended up having markings from the threads.

This worked amazingly! I vaselined my whole face and I'm glad that I did! It came off fairly easily! I'm trying to do ellimacs Medusa so I need a face cast to so the prosthetics. Glad I looked for other videos because this one is the easiest one I found! And cheapest! Only cost me about $10 in supplies (Michael's half off one item coupon).

Can this be done with a beard and mustache as long as you Vaseline it as well, or would I need to shave?

No. No. No. and no. Never apply plaster to your skin no matter how thin it is. You can seriously burn yourself or cause harm. Also, never attempt to cast your own face by yourself. You’re asking for trouble.

3 TIMES I did the plaster cast and not once did my plaster cast come out smooth on the inside. Nor did it build up looking fluufy & marshmallowy on the outside while applying. I wish you would link too or name the type or brand of products more completely. I'm going to try another plaster gauze. The belly cast was to rough. Love your show you two are very talented & filled with humor & light. Your voodoo doll was one of my favorite costumes. I scared a lot of people that year!

Ive been in education for prosthetic makeup for the past 5 years, currently about to graduate a BA Honour program in this field, NEVER, and i mean NEVER, make a face cast of yourself, and NEVER put plaster bandages directly onto skin, the exothermic reaction can burn you, the bandage will absorb the moisture in your skin and make it extremely difficult to remove and if unsupervised you could seriously injure yourself. i love this channel but this is completely unethical and irresponsible to post a tutorial of something like this that isn't accurate and safe, people have to go through a lot of training before lifecasting for a reason.

Ok. This is a bad idea, a REALLY bad idea. If you want to cast your face, please be smart and safe about it. A good rule of thumb is to NEVER put a hard material onto a model’s (or your own) face. Plaster bandages alone will grab eyelashes, eyebrows, and even cling to skin. Then there’s the worry of the plaster bandages locking to your face (this is unfortunately common due to videos like this).
Dental alginate (or better yet Body Double Life casting material) is so much safer to use directly on skin. Plaster bandages are great for making a hard shell to keep the shape of the alginate, but is NOT a good material to use directly on skin for any application.

For everyone STILL arguing after all this time: I did that TODAY and I still have skin, eyebrows and all. My skin is not dry at all and I didn't have any problems whatsoever. All you have to pay attention to is that you use water below 35°C, use plaster gauze that is safe like the ones for pregnancy belly's and coat your face with vaseline or petroleum jelly.

There is a very specific plaster that is skin safe. There are many that are not. I disagree with youtibers promoting this technique when they dont talk about the exact products and safety procedures. People who have copied these videos with the wrong materials HAVE given themselves burns and ripped skin off.
