Disordered eating isn't always the same as an eating disorder. The show never used that word. I think for the age group it was intended for, they did well with portraying that sometimes people struggle with their bodies and experience pressure, but that it's important to try to maintain healthy habits and reach out for help when you or someone you care about is struggling, even if they get defensive.

I was always more of a "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide" kind of guy, a show which did address a lot of kids' issues in a well-thought out way. They didn't cover eating disorders, but they did cover being self-conscious about appearance several times and emphasized talking to trusted adults for help very often.

This show was meant for pre teens. It can’t be too distressing also considering that it’s afternoon television. It touched on the topic so introduces kids to the idea. I think they did a good job with it all around.

Good video and points. I actually remember this episode as a young preteen and found this topic quite memorable. The episode premiered around the right time when eating disorders and body images are starting to become a huge issue especially among adolescent girls. All thanks to the media, fashion magazines, peer pressure, and standards of beauty. The show's heart was certainly in the right place when they tried to address the topic for kids and those on the verge of puberty. I thought it mostly done a good job in that regards and Lizzie McGuire was probably one of the few earlier kids' show to ever address eating disorder as an issue at all. Although I also agree do a bit about Miranda in the end who cites parental and school pressure as part of the main driving force behind her disorder. Unless she allows the pressure of both to change her eating habits (things like 'stress eating' and a low self-esteem that would allow Gordo's earlier remark to make a lot sense and for Miranda to start feeling anymore weight conscious related to the music video). The pointless Matt subplot was probably done there to make the episode feel less serious or unnerving for kids.

I remember watching this episode when I was in elementary school and I really liked it. It was targeted at kids, and I think it was well done for the time. It got the point across without being too depressing and I definitely learned some shit. These topics were handled differently back then so I don't think it's fair to bash it from a 2019 point of view. I don't recall any other Disney shows at that time handling that issue so I was impressed. Same idea with that one episode of Smart Guy that handled the child molester issue, I still remember it and it taught me some real shit even though it was only one episode.

As someone who watched the show at the time despite being in my 20s and as someone who remembered the famous Full House episode about DJ, I thought the show was at least being by trying to take on something serious as previous generations of shows might. To me the actual focus was mis-labeled perhaps. As someone with learning and emotional disabilities, I do tend to hone in on when I see evidence of things out of place in regards to a mental mindset. So to me, it seems clear, the real focus should have been on her feeling of loss of control of which the temporary eating concern was only a result. However I do know that I was looking at it as an adult and not of the actual demographic of the show and probably was padding out in my mind the scenario.

I struggled with an eating disorder from the ages 13-19. I understand that things are not portrayed perfectly on this show, but it’s a show for young kids on a family friendly network, it can’t be too dark of an episode.
The fact that they even made an episode about eating disorders is great, because it’s something that is real. Disney used to use some great, important topics in their older shows. That’s So Raven did episodes about body image and racism. You would never find that stuff on Disney Channel today. So i applaud them for this episode, personally

I remember watching lizzie mcguire as a kid but i dont remember many episodes because i was so young. When i was 13 i developed anorexia. Well I had no memory of this episode or even heard anything of it. Now i remember one night when I was 13 i was sleeping by my best friend's house who ive known for years. But we were watching disney because at the time they were playing their older shows late at night. So she fell asleep and I couldnt sleep and this episode came on and honestly i felt attacked and shocked disney made it, but I thought it was good. It made me feel less alone I guess. Personally I like this episode. I think it is good for preteens and younger. I was like 4 or 6 when the show was on, but for someone a bit older but who is still a child i personally think it's a good way to introduce kids to the topic without mortifying them. If it were lizzy who had the ED and you saw her perspective it would be awful to introduce into a young kids head all the suffering that will happen. You wont hear these thoughts they have and want to repeat them. I like how it wasnt glorified. It showed the kids "hey if you know someone like this talk to an adult and try to help them" because it shows kids catch it early. I often wonder if I had friends who did something about it what would have happened. My friends knew what I was doing. I was extremely overweight so it was all compliments but then it divulged into "you dont eat why are you losing weight so fast please eat". like maybe if someone spoke out within the first month when i slipped into it and went from bringing a normal lunch to eating two blueberries. How i stopped talking with everyone. How rumors went around middle school. Like maybe if someone spoke up and saw early enough maybe I would've been able to make a full recovery. Im 17 now, 18 in a few months. Ive been in and out of recovery. Gained a healthy amount of weight but still i relapse every 2 months or less for big chunks of time until i get more meds. Idk if it did much but honestly i think it could've impacted someones life for the better

Maybe they missed an opportunity for the younger brother to paint a picture of Miranda and then she can more easily see her beauty and worth.... Kind of see herself in a different light, that would tie into the whole inner beauty title ?

Good analysis. I remember when I first saw this episode. I thought t as probably a good start to get kids thinking about some of these issues, but at the end when Lizzie and Gordo simply explain why Miranda shouldn’t do that, she’s like “Oh you’re right” and everything is fixed, and I remember thinking, I’m pretty sure it would take a longer time than that and not be quite so simple. But I realize it’s a lighter show with limited time.

I really appreciate how constructive and analytical this video was. I'm glad that you are able to use your own experiences to give your arguments weight but also to reach out and give valuable insight to a very delicate topic. It's rare to see a video like this that isn't angry, but actually quite positive even while providing criticism. This could have been a total rant at the show for how inaccurate it is but instead you used this as a teaching opportunity. I don't personally suffer with an eating disorder but I feel like I've learned something from watching your video. When it comes to mental illness, I think it's important to be frank but also approach it in a calm manner. I think being angry can just further isolate rather than connect people to the problem.
I think what I'm trying to say is this is an excellent video on a difficult topic. Thank you for sharing!

I think you're being way too critical of a show for pre teens in the 2000's. If they went into it fully for 20 minutes I think it would be too unsettling for the young audience. The comic relief was necessary, if albeit, not all that funny

Kids as young as 10 develop anorexia, bulimia and body dysmophia. I don't think it would be such a bad idea to at least have the whole show based on the serious issue instead of sliding in comic relief randomly. The fact that she gets over such a harsh view of herself in a day is bad enough.

totally agree, I watched lizzie mcguire back to back when I was young, and honestly I just remember that I didn't really understand this episode at all. At the end of it I was just like, WHAT THE HECK, why would anyone do that? Then after thinking about it a bit, I think I realised in some way what was going on and felt upset? I think if they went more in depth into it, it would've freaked out a lot of younger people (me included). (and parents) there's a point where you can go to in depth into a topic and glorify it rather than just raise awareness

I understand your particular concerns with the episodes, maybe a 20 minute episode with comedic relief isn’t the best format to tackle the subject for middle schoolers but for me it worked. I was in early elementary school when this episode came out and it was my first time hearing about body dysmorphia and crash diets. It was dealt with in a way that was easy for me to understand and I really cared about the characters so I could sympathize with Lizzie’s concern for her friend and Miranda’s need for control. I haven’t suffered from any eating disorders but I definitely have body dysmorphic disorder that’s always there but it crops up worse every once in a while. This episode made such an impact on me that I think about it every so often when I’m dealing with my own body dysmorphia.

Good review I do agree with some points it is quite annoying to have sub plot with Lizzies brother when having an episode on a serious topic and not having enough time to explore the topic more but this episode isn't bad I think it is the right show to tickle such a serious topic because so many young girls struggle with body image and eating disorders and the show doesn't do bad job of talking about it because so many shows at the time didn't mention topics like this and I think that they didn't go further with this episode it is more on body image than eating disorders but they didn't show you what would of happened if she developed an eating disorder which one of the reasons it falls flat
