Another Disney show, The Famous Jett Jackson had a episode about bulimia that I think handled it much better than Lizzie McGuire did with Miranda's eating disorder, and yet came out around the same time. I'd look into that one if you wanna do a comparative video.
This was wonderful to watch, thank you for posting it, as seeing part of the BDD website at the end showed me that I have a behavior that might fall under BDD, so I'm interested into looking more into it.

I struggled with an eating disorder from the ages 13-19. I understand that things are not portrayed perfectly on this show, but it’s a show for young kids on a family friendly network, it can’t be too dark of an episode.
The fact that they even made an episode about eating disorders is great, because it’s something that is real. Disney used to use some great, important topics in their older shows. That’s So Raven did episodes about body image and racism. You would never find that stuff on Disney Channel today. So i applaud them for this episode, personally

I remember watching lizzie mcguire as a kid but i dont remember many episodes because i was so young. When i was 13 i developed anorexia. Well I had no memory of this episode or even heard anything of it. Now i remember one night when I was 13 i was sleeping by my best friend's house who ive known for years. But we were watching disney because at the time they were playing their older shows late at night. So she fell asleep and I couldnt sleep and this episode came on and honestly i felt attacked and shocked disney made it, but I thought it was good. It made me feel less alone I guess. Personally I like this episode. I think it is good for preteens and younger. I was like 4 or 6 when the show was on, but for someone a bit older but who is still a child i personally think it's a good way to introduce kids to the topic without mortifying them. If it were lizzy who had the ED and you saw her perspective it would be awful to introduce into a young kids head all the suffering that will happen. You wont hear these thoughts they have and want to repeat them. I like how it wasnt glorified. It showed the kids "hey if you know someone like this talk to an adult and try to help them" because it shows kids catch it early. I often wonder if I had friends who did something about it what would have happened. My friends knew what I was doing. I was extremely overweight so it was all compliments but then it divulged into "you dont eat why are you losing weight so fast please eat". like maybe if someone spoke out within the first month when i slipped into it and went from bringing a normal lunch to eating two blueberries. How i stopped talking with everyone. How rumors went around middle school. Like maybe if someone spoke up and saw early enough maybe I would've been able to make a full recovery. Im 17 now, 18 in a few months. Ive been in and out of recovery. Gained a healthy amount of weight but still i relapse every 2 months or less for big chunks of time until i get more meds. Idk if it did much but honestly i think it could've impacted someones life for the better

Maybe they missed an opportunity for the younger brother to paint a picture of Miranda and then she can more easily see her beauty and worth.... Kind of see herself in a different light, that would tie into the whole inner beauty title ?

Good analysis. I remember when I first saw this episode. I thought t as probably a good start to get kids thinking about some of these issues, but at the end when Lizzie and Gordo simply explain why Miranda shouldn’t do that, she’s like “Oh you’re right” and everything is fixed, and I remember thinking, I’m pretty sure it would take a longer time than that and not be quite so simple. But I realize it’s a lighter show with limited time.

I really appreciate how constructive and analytical this video was. I'm glad that you are able to use your own experiences to give your arguments weight but also to reach out and give valuable insight to a very delicate topic. It's rare to see a video like this that isn't angry, but actually quite positive even while providing criticism. This could have been a total rant at the show for how inaccurate it is but instead you used this as a teaching opportunity. I don't personally suffer with an eating disorder but I feel like I've learned something from watching your video. When it comes to mental illness, I think it's important to be frank but also approach it in a calm manner. I think being angry can just further isolate rather than connect people to the problem.
I think what I'm trying to say is this is an excellent video on a difficult topic. Thank you for sharing!

I think you're being way too critical of a show for pre teens in the 2000's. If they went into it fully for 20 minutes I think it would be too unsettling for the young audience. The comic relief was necessary, if albeit, not all that funny

Kids as young as 10 develop anorexia, bulimia and body dysmophia. I don't think it would be such a bad idea to at least have the whole show based on the serious issue instead of sliding in comic relief randomly. The fact that she gets over such a harsh view of herself in a day is bad enough.

totally agree, I watched lizzie mcguire back to back when I was young, and honestly I just remember that I didn't really understand this episode at all. At the end of it I was just like, WHAT THE HECK, why would anyone do that? Then after thinking about it a bit, I think I realised in some way what was going on and felt upset? I think if they went more in depth into it, it would've freaked out a lot of younger people (me included). (and parents) there's a point where you can go to in depth into a topic and glorify it rather than just raise awareness

I understand your particular concerns with the episodes, maybe a 20 minute episode with comedic relief isn’t the best format to tackle the subject for middle schoolers but for me it worked. I was in early elementary school when this episode came out and it was my first time hearing about body dysmorphia and crash diets. It was dealt with in a way that was easy for me to understand and I really cared about the characters so I could sympathize with Lizzie’s concern for her friend and Miranda’s need for control. I haven’t suffered from any eating disorders but I definitely have body dysmorphic disorder that’s always there but it crops up worse every once in a while. This episode made such an impact on me that I think about it every so often when I’m dealing with my own body dysmorphia.

I don't blame them for not actually showing Miranda starving herself or having it not going on for a long time. I imagine it's to do with the age rating for the show. It's also known that exposure to the concept of various eating disorders can actually influence little kids to try it themselves. All they could really tell children from this episode was "don't starve yourself" rather than actually explore the topic in depth.

Good review I do agree with some points it is quite annoying to have sub plot with Lizzies brother when having an episode on a serious topic and not having enough time to explore the topic more but this episode isn't bad I think it is the right show to tickle such a serious topic because so many young girls struggle with body image and eating disorders and the show doesn't do bad job of talking about it because so many shows at the time didn't mention topics like this and I think that they didn't go further with this episode it is more on body image than eating disorders but they didn't show you what would of happened if she developed an eating disorder which one of the reasons it falls flat

I just watched a video essay about the full house episode dealing with eating disorders, and I can’t help but notice the similarities. The plot of this one is virtually the same, just with lower stakes and more comic relief. The one thing this episode does better is dealing with exactly why Miranda is developing this mind set and how her life outside of that factors in, which the full house episode didn’t. However, this show seemed to brush it off more quickly than full house did, solving everything with the power of friendship which I think does it a major disservice.

I hated how she acted in this episode because it seemed unrealistic to me,as a kid I pretty much just thought she was being stupid, which her character usually isn't & I didn't understand it. Compared to Degrassi's episode about eating disorders that left me shooketh for weeks because of my own body issues. That let's me know they DEFINITELY didn't do a good job at hitting a home-run with their message due to Disney's "cleanliness" with their approach. This was a joy to watch👌.

You look incredible, homegirl ❤ My sister was anorexic in her late teens and I remember when I first realized how bad it was; my girlfriend and I went swimming with my sister and her boyfriend at the time (who was/is my best friend) and I remember the sight of my sister's legs frightened me. She was a literal skeleton and for some reason I didn't notice it as bad until that day we all went swimming. Within that same month me and another friend of mine had to literally break down in tears and beg her to allow my family to get her help and sure enough when we got her to a specialist, we were told she was at death's door and she was immediately put in Texas Children's Hospital where she spent almost half a year. It was one of the most traumatizing things I had ever witnessed and to this day (15 years later) she still has minor eating issues, but naturally she's learned to take care of herself with age and doesn't allow her OCD to control her eating habits. I'm fairly new to your channel (perhaps a year), so I don't know much about you, but I'm glad to see you're obviously doing well and you're very strong for having gone through that and come out the other side alive 💪 Much much love ✌❤

Thank you for this excellent video. I agree with where you were coming from on the critique, and agree it probably would have been better without Matt's story. They may even have been able to have it take place over more time that way, or possibly finding out it hadn't just started would have been good. Who knows though? Very special episodes always had a weirdness to them, and without the show going almost completely serious, that's just doubled here.
as an aside, I actually did watch a fair amount of the show when I was in my early 20s. This and Even Stevens came on between when I got home from work and my roommate did, so I'd usually put them on while waiting so we could go get dinner. They were fun and ridiculous, but I probably wouldn't have watched them if not for that timing.

I remember that Lizzie's parents were always easy-going and accessible for Matt and Lizzie to talk to about their friends, school etc.. to encourage kids to have an open dialogue with their parents.
I also feel like there were a lot of one off eating disorder episodes of kids/family shows at that because it was too difficult to make an accessible series about it (especially for Disney Channel), and at the time the world at large was like "it's 2000 our kids are doing drugs, and have eating disorders it scares us to talk to them about it so let's get Zack and Cody to do it for us" kinda' like how in 2008 everyone was like this tv teenager got pregnant and so will your kids if they don't watch glee or degrassi.

It always seems somehow difficult when TV series that are just 30 minutes long try to deal with difficult topics.
And in the end, the status quo returns, and the topic practically didn't take place after that.
(For example: Do you remember the episode of Saving by the Bell, where the chick - you know. The one who got naked in Showgirls - got addicted to caffeine tablets?
Or the episode where the other one suddenly starts smoking cigarettes?)

Has any tv show actually covered eating disorders well? It always seems to be a one-off "very special" episode and not an ongoing struggle for the character.

That's mostly because an eating disorder isn't exactly a very compelling or dramatic long-term arc. Simply put, it doesn't make good TV and can be replaced with other, more dramatic or sensational arcs like drug abuse or addiction. It's like how PTSD and depression are really popular in shows: these mental illnesses, while complex, are more relatable and easy to digest in a TV show, along with being interesting and appealing to most people. A show will usually be entertaining before it addresses any mental illness topic.

I remember watching this episode while making friendship bracelets. Life With Derek (I think that’s what it was called) came on after. I just remember this so clearly because I asked my older, teen cousin if she had an eating disorder because of it. Turned out she was just vegetarian, whoops.

i had a brain scan that came up with ocd-type results and i think i might have body dysmorphia now. i worry about my appearance a lot and often find different parts of my face looking different depending on when i look at them (even if it’s like 2 seconds apart) and i’m terrified of seeing myself in my phone camera. i never knew that it was linked to ocd. i’ll talk to my therapist about this. this was a helpful video, thanks (:

If u want, I suggest watching the entire series! Though it may seem childish, it's episodes are actually deep, especially regarding episodes about the relationship of Lizzie with her mom.
I rewatched it recently and was amazed at how many episodes I was able to relate to, even if I am turning 19 soon.

out of all the Disney channel shows that did eating disorder episodes, I think Thats So Raven handled the topic the best.

I just have something in my eye ok?
Thanks for sharing with us and i hope one day I’m that brave. I’m still terrified to be on camera. I literally have videos written out but i never film i just can’t handle it. Pictures feel more controlled i have my angles and lighting. But video just feels like I’m on display and i can’t handle it. My issues got worse after having my baby. I adore her but i barley feel like myself in my body even after a year and a half.

very special episodes usually sucked because usually they were about EDs or drug/alcohol problems which cant be resolved in a day or two

I watched this show with my daughter, I watched every show my daughter watched until she was about 15. Looking back now I felt like it could have easily been a minor sub plot in the season starting episode 1 but ending with the season finale being all about Miranda. They are shopping in an episode and she is staring at herself in the mirror. Subtle. Next episode she is fussing with her clothes pulling them down a lot. Next episode mentioning the grades and parents. Next episode she doesn't eat the nasty lunches and says she will eat her mom's excellent Mexican food when she gets home, but then they show her fussing with food, then the music video with her fainting. Build up to it like it is in reality where it is not one day but many days.

This is an interesting video. One would say it's overanalyzing a Disney show that has to fit a time frame, but it's good to think critically of content we consume, old and new, and understand how it can affect us.
Andi Mack is the modern equivalent to Lizzie Migure imo. The show allows a plot to carry over several episodes so I'd like to see them tackle a topic like this (if they haven't already)
